I am a big Fan of Dali. As for my reference in this blog, my favourite paintings of his number a few. There is of course, the melting clocks. Can You Imagine Inc. actually sells a working melting clock, that can sit on the side of your counter. It is really cool. The idea of time was important to Dali. It could be measured in a piece of cheese moving across the table in the sun.
Another painting of his is the Temptation of St. Anthony. This is one of his dreams, that he expunged on canvas. Dreams and altered states of consciousness fill Dali's work. His took from his dreams the visions of Surrealism.
Notably Gala his wife was a major influence in his life. She marketed his early sculptures. There were many images of Gala. She was his muse. The one painting that is more popular than the watches, was the sacrament of the last supper. Religion was a major influence in Dali's images as well. The sacrament took 9 months to finish. It hangs in the National Gallery of art , in Washington. It is a very large painting, not like the watches which is small. It was reproduced in the millions, by The Chesterdale Foundation. They made it into postcards as well. I own the print, and the postcard.
Let me describe the work. It has a torso on top , in the space, over the last supper., and divided into 12 parts. This has something to do with the universe as contemplated by the Greeks and Pythagoras. There is no head on the torso. The hand of the torso fall and it is much like the famous painting by Michelangelo. The one where Adam is touching the piece of the sky. In Dali's work, the fingers and arms fall at both sides of the painting. It is truly a masterpiece, and defining the great talent of Dali. I am looking at the work now, oops, I just spilled my coffee all over the paper. I am being punished for this blasphemy of critiquing his work. I
